These abstract digital paintings were created primarily on my phone using the ZenBrush 3 app.  They are available as 20″ x 16″ canvas prints or smaller sizes on paper.

Much as a sumi-e painter uses ink, I started by painting fluid lines with a brush using a permanent medium.  My medium was bleach on black knit tunics for my clothing line, Younger Knits, back in 1995, rather than ink on rice paper. Both ink and bleach leave no room for hesitation; you must fully  commit to the stroke as you make it.  I enjoy witnessing the result; as much an observer as I am the mark maker.

As my fine motor control diminishes due to Parkinson’s Disease, I dance between fluid motion, spontaneous and free, and the erratic tremors.  These digital finger paintings allow me to continue to freely express the energy and beauty of color, I have always found so compelling in my work.

The digital tool allows me some latitude to shape the result to my aesthetic sensibilities, without depending on full control of my hands.  My vocabulary of fluid lines are influenced by Japanese calligraphy, though my lines are not rooted in any formal training or actual language.  It has shown up in my art work and clothing line throughout my art career as my own personal language.

Squared Space Paintings is a digital print series about finding freedom within restriction and infinite options within finite parameters. While the work itself, is non-conceptual: it was generated by my experience of confinement during the pandemic and the polarized racial and political climate in the U.S in 2020.

All images were created on an IPad Pro, with the Zenbrush 2 app which has a limited palette of black and red with an eraser in 3 levels of opacity.  In addition to those limits, I kept to non-figurative imagery within a square format.  Each was created as a spontaneous creation.
